Collection Events Success!
For 15 years, PRC has been working with communities, volunteers, and partners to collect toxic and specialty items to be responsibly managed and recycled. From televisions & computer monitors, to paints & household cleaners, to pharmaceuticals & tires PRC hosts collection across southwestern Pennsylvania every year to ensure that residents have access to safe disposal options and that our waste doesn’t harm the environment!
By dumping household chemicals or medications down the drain, or by placing electronics in curbside trash cans, harmful materials ranging from lead to mercury to brominated flame retardants and more can end up in drinking water or contaminating public land.
PRC works hard to collected these materials at one-day drop-off events. In 2017:
- PRC hosted six Household Chemical Collection Events, which collected over 360,000 pounds of paints, auto fluids, and other household chemicals from over 4,500 households.
- PRC hosted five Hard to Recycle Collection Events which collected almost 340,000 pounds of electronic waste (televisions, computers, cell phones, etc.), over 1,200 tires, and over 3,500 cubic feet of expanded polystyrene from 3,800 Pennsylvania households.
- PRC also ran 6 total collection events as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s two National Drug Takeback Days, collecting 2027 pounds of pharmaceuticals from over 750 Pennsylvania homes!
- PRC collected hundreds of pounds of gently used supplies from over 300 families to be reused by local non-profits at 2 ReuseFest events.
Thanks to everyone who made the 2017 Collection Season a huge success! PRC would like to extend a special thank you to each and every one of our dedicated volunteers. Volunteers work hard to serve Pennsylvania residents, rain or shine, and ensure that materials are recycled and properly managed.
Over the last several years, volunteers from NOVA Chemicals have really stepped up to help PRC provide these vital services to Pennsylvania residents. In 2017 alone, staff from NOVA Chemicals have provided over 200 hours of volunteer time to PRC! To Nova Chemicals, our volunteer and contractor team, participants, partners and sponsors, thank you for another successful year! We couldn’t have done it without you!
