Free collection of car tires off rims (no commercial tires or tires on rims accepted) for the residents of Allegheny County.

Resides of Stanton Heights, Morningside, Highland Park and Garfield can call for curbside pick up of tires.

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD), the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), and the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works will be hosting a one day tire collection event this Saturday, May 20th 2017 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m (or until the max of 500 tires have been collected). The free collection will take place at the Sunnyside Elementary School Parking lot located at 4801 Stanton Avenue in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh.

Residents of Allegheny County are encouraged to bring their scrap tires, off rims only, to the collection site.  A maximum of 8 tires per car will be accepted. Residents in the neighborhoods of Stanton Heights, Highland Park, Garfield, and Morningside who are unable to bring tires to the collection site will have the opportunity to schedule a curbside pickup of their tires.  Only tires off rim will be accepted at the drop off and be eligible for curbside pickup.

Mosquitoes pose a concern because they can transmit diseases such as West Nile and Zika to individuals and domestic animals. The best way to control mosquitoes is to eliminate their breeding sites. The tire collection event is being offered because scrap automobile tires are an excellent breeding site. The stagnant water in a single tire can produce thousands of mosquitoes in one season.  In addition to removing scrap tires, ACHD encourages residents to eliminate any other water-holding items on their property.

The collection event can accept 500 tires, so individuals wishing to drop off tires are encouraged to do so early.

For more details on the tire collection event or to schedule a curbside pick-up please call PRC at (412) 773.7156.
