What’s Up, Watershed, February Edition
Did you know that during a one-inch rainstorm, the roof of your home can generate hundreds of gallons of stormwater? During a storm, water from our roofs often ends up in our storm sewers and waterways, contributing to issues such as flooding and pollution of our local drinking water sources. As community members, each of us needs to do our part to protect our water. Here at PRC, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to take part in protecting our environment. That’s why we helped to create www.growinggreenercommunities.org, a new website to help residents like you become watershed stewards. Read on to learn more!

The new website www.growinggreenercommunities.org serves as a one-stop shop for folks interested in making their homes and communities more eco-friendly. We’ve put together tons of free resources focused on how residents like you can protect our waterways and create wildlife habitat by reducing stormwater runoff. On the site, you’ll find instructional guides, educational videos, and informational web pages on a variety of topics. Below, I’ve listed a few sample articles that you can check out while chilling by the literal or metaphorical fireplace this winter.
“What is a watershed?” Stop saving up for that fancy beach house or lakeside cabin — you already have a waterfront property! That’s right, no matter if we live right next to our local stream or miles away from any body of water, each of us is deeply connected to our local waterways. Why? Because we all live in a watershed! Check out this webpage to learn all about what a watershed is and how you can protect yours.
“What is stormwater?” If watersheds are like a body, then stormwater is the lifeblood. Stormwater has an important impact on every community in Pennsylvania, whether we live in farm country or in a major city. It can also cost us a lot of money if managed improperly, such as the cost of flood damage or the rising cost of drinking water treatment. Check out this article to learn more about stormwater, an important yet overlooked resource.
“How Can You Help?” Whether you’re new to these topics or a seasoned environmentalist, we want to help you make it as easy as possible to protect the environment starting right at your home! A great way to begin is by checking out our “How Can You Help?” page, which will walk you step-by-step through the process of deciding which stormwater solutions are right for your home or community.
As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next time on, “What’s Up, Watershed?”!
