Successful “Zero Waste Non-Event” Supports Statewide Programs

Posted on October 29, 2024 by Mary Beth Mueller

PRC launched a new fundraising model two years ago, moving away from our annual gala and embracing our mission to prevent waste and conserve Pennsylvania’s environmental resources. Following two successful years, PRC held its third annual “Zero Waste Non-Event” in 2024. The “Non-Event” raised funds to support PRC’s statewide programs and avoided an estimated 750 pounds of waste typically generated by the dinner held for hundreds of people. Instead, PRC is now recognizing donors on digital platforms and at all of our community education events.

“As we work to create a Pennsylvania where nothing is wasted, we need to live that vision in our own practice,” said Darren Spielman, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Resources Council. “We are heartened that our third annual Zero Waste Non-Event surpassed the first two – demonstrating our ability to recognize our supporters while maximizing the resources we can dedicate to our statewide efforts. In this way, our donors amplify their impact.”

Money raised during the Zero Waste Non-Event supports waste reduction and diversion initiatives, environmental justice in watersheds, and environmental education for people of all ages.

Since 2009, along with large-scale waste diversion, education, and watershed protection efforts, PRC has provided waste reduction services through its Zero Waste Pennsylvania program to businesses, institutions, residents, and special events across the state – ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies. Now, PRC has hosted its own “Non-Event,” producing no waste.

We thank all 2024 Zero-Waste Non-Event sponsors who help PRC strive for a Pennsylvania where nothing is wasted.

2024 sponsors and supporters included: BlankRome, Branton Strategies, Lopez Family Fund, Q Development, Reworld, Marta and Robert Adelson Family Foundation, CAP Glass, Construction Junction, Jason and Angela Duckworth, Duranti’s Landscaping, Eckert Seamans, Eldredge Inc, eLoop LLC, Enviro World, Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds, Fox Rothschild LLP, Green Investment Strategies, Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages, Liberty Tire Services LLC, Michael Brothers Companies, Monroe Energy, Race toZero Waste,  TrailBlaze Creative, YourCFO, evolveEA, Raymond Richards, Howard Wein, Esq.  Thanks also to our generous matching grant foundation!

Images of the Zero Waste Non-Event can be viewed on PRC’s Facebook, Instagram, and X platforms. Organizations and individuals interested in reducing and diverting waste and preserving the environment are invited to become PRC Supporters. Businesses and organizations seeking to host their own events with a zero-waste goal can contact PRC for services.

In 2023, supporters helped PRC:

  • reuse, recycle, and safely manage nearly 3.5 million pounds of materials – eliminating approximately 2,600 metric tons of greenhouse gases;
  • recycle 1,225 tons of glass from 50,000 households and expand glass operations to southeastern PA;
  • educate more than 4,500 k12 students about waste, watersheds, and sustainable energy;
  • train 1,130+ community members to reduce waste, manage stormwater, and steward the environment;
  • expand composting across the region;
  • implement green stormwater infrastructure projects managing 6 million gallons of stormwater per year, and much more.
