Pittsburgh Residential Recycling Bins

PRC has distributed over 10,000 residential recycling bins to Pittsburgh residents since our first pilot project in 2015.  PRC has supported this project through partnerships and financial support from the Buhl and Alcoa Foundations.

In 2019 PRC has limited funding from the Buhl Foundation targeting Northside residents only. To register for a Fall 2019 Northside bin distribution, visit www.prc.org/northside.

Not eligible for the Northside 2019 bin project, but still want a bin?

The City of Pittsburgh has announced a 3-year-plan to distribute blue bins to City residents beginning in 2020.
To sign up to receive more information as the City determines the program, please contact pittsburghpa.gov/blue-bin-info, or you may call the City of Pittsburgh 311 response line by calling 3-1-1 or (412) 255-2621.

As a leader of the transition to residential recycling bins starting with our pilot project in 2015, PRC continues to support all efforts to modernize the City’s recycling program including the City’s bin distribution program in 2020 and onward.

While City of Pittsburgh residents were previously instructed to set out their recyclables in blue plastic bags, the City has updated their recycling regulations and is requesting that residents move toward placing their items unbagged in blue bins in designated recycling collection sites on their biweekly recycling pickup day. Blue bins should be no larger than 35 gallons.

Why is this change occurring? Excess plastic bags cause issues at recycling plants (Materials Recovery Facilities or MRFs), clogging the machinery, reducing efficiency, and placing employees at risk. Using bins reduces the need for these bags and increases recycling rates.

By placing your recyclable materials, unbagged, in your new blue recycling bin, you’ll help keep valuable materials out of our landfills!
