McCandless residents can soon drop off glass bottles, jars and jugs at a permanent recycling dumpster located off Grubbs Road thanks to a grant provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP).
Beginning on May 27, residents can drop off all colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs in the Town of McCandless as part of a region-wide glass recycling network. The Glass Recycling Collaborative of Southwestern PA, a newly formed partnership between municipalities in Allegheny County and the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), provides reliable, uninterrupted glass recycling access.
“Residents of McCandless are interested in recycling glass even when it isn’t collected curbside, and we’re excited to provide residents with an opportunity to drop off glass in a convenient location,” according to McCandless Town Manager Robert Grimm. “With the help of PRC we’re installing a permanent glass recycling station and will implement a campaign to educate residents regarding glass recycling and other waste reduction activities.”
The blue recycling dumpster will be located in the parking lot of the McCandless Town Hall and will be available for self-serve drop off daily from dawn to dusk. Individuals can deposit glass bottles, jars and jugs of all colors (no sorting required). Containers should be empty and rinsed, with lids and labels still on. Bags and boxes used to deliver glass must be discarded off site.
“Glass is still one of the most recyclable materials we generate in our homes, and the market for glass recycling is very strong,” according to PRC Deputy Director Sarah Alessio Shea. “It’s important from an environmental perspective to keep glass out of landfills, and PRC is dedicated to building an efficient, region-wide glass recycling collection network with partners such as McCandless.”
This permanent recycling site is sponsored by the Town of McCandless and is made possible through a PA DEP recycling grant held by Dormont Borough. Program partners are CAP Glass and Michael Brothers Hauling & Recycling.

“All glass collected will be hauled by Michael Brothers to CAP Glass in Mt. Pleasant, Pa.,” said Shea. “There it will be sorted and prepared for use by regional glass product manufacturers, and a bottle, jar or jug dropped in the bin today could be recycled and back on a store shelf in less than 30 days.”
