NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES TO RECYCLE GLASS IN OCTOBER

Posted on September 21, 2020 by Pennsylvania Resources Council

PRC’s Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program – which serves residents living in municipalities no longer accepting glass in curbside recycling collection – will make numerous stops in western Pennsylvania this October.

PRC Traveling Glass Recycling Bin’s week-long engagements in October 2020:

October 10 – 15 @ HAMPTON COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL

Address: 3101 McCully Rd., Allison Park, PA 15101

Presented by Hampton Township

October 17 – 22 @ BOROUGH OF THORNBURG MAINTENANCE FACILITY

Address: 25 Rutgers Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15205

Presented by Borough of Thornburg

October 24 – 29 @ BOYCE PARK SOCCER FIELDS

Address: Boyce Park, Intersection of Pierson Run Rd. and Centerview Dr., Plum, PA 15239

Presented by Plum Borough

Since launching its Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program in early June, PRC has collected more than 58 tons of glass and has expanded the program’s format to include four-hour appearances at hard-to-recycle events.

“The bin visits various locations on a weekly basis from Saturday through Thursday and provides residents with a safe method for recycling glass while eliminating the need to interact with other individuals or touch shared surfaces,” according to PRC Environmental Program Coordinator Ashley DiGregorio.  “In addition to the weeklong engagements, PRC has recently introduced one-day bin appearances at its hard-to-recycle collection events as an additional service to area residents.”

In October, individuals can recycle glass containers at two upcoming PRC hard-to-recycle collection events (no advance registration required to recycle glass only at these events):

Saturday, October 3, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. @ Settlers Cabin Park Wave Pool parking lot

Address: 635 Ridge Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15205

Saturday, October 24, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. @ Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills

Address: 590 Pittsburgh Mills Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15084

At both types of Traveling Glass Recycling Bin appearances, individuals can drop off glass bottles, jars and jugs of all colors (no color sorting required).  Containers should be empty and rinsed, with lids and labels still on.  Bags and boxes used to deliver glass must be discarded off-site.

“Reasons for recycling glass include the fact that glass can be recycled forever,” said DiGregorio.  “Recycling glass requires 70 percent less energy than when manufacturing glass from raw materials, and a glass bottle can go from recycling bin back to store shelf in as little as 30 days.”

PRC’s Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program is sponsored by Owens-Illinois, Inc. and CAP Glass.  For more information – including a schedule of upcoming appearances and information about how to bring glass to your community – visit prc.org/glassrecycling or call 412-488-7490.
